Unhappy cant detect cdrom drive from Linux


I have my cdrom drive as a secondary slave attachment and Linux RH9 in dual boot with Windows2k Prof.While Windows detects my cdrom drive Linux does not.There is no entry in /etc/fstab and no 'cdrom' directory in /mnt.Cant make out what has gone wrong.Can somebody help

a secondary slave would be /dev/hdd unless scsi emulation is set up.
with a data cdrom in the drive, do

mkdir /mnt/cdrom
mount /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom
cd /mnt/cdrom
ls
