Try a knoppix bootable CD on it and see how it runs... If that's not too bad it'll run Mandrake or whatever with KDE...

Chances are tho you'll be wanting a lighter window manager like windowmaker or something, but all the distros have options of what to run.

Slackware w/ Fluxbox would run just fine.

i have the exact same system !!!!
the latest fedora realse (fedora core 2) runs quite nicely.

ofcourse you will want to turn off the 'eye candy'
maybe use iceWM instead of KDE.
and ofcourse make sure your not running any services you dont use.

Thx all

This is actually the first time i will see a linux operation system, win 98 is too slow on this machine and i was recomended about linux.

ill try fedora and see how it goes, thx for helping me out:)

i think the problem you are facing, is that newer Distro's with newer kernels and library's will use your machine more efficiantly... however they also come with pretty special effects, and animated / fading desktop effects.

so in the long run, a newer distro properly setup should work better.
but you must be prepaired to do some reading and learning.

converting your knoledge of windows to linux requres a little effort.

Slackware can do it.

I'd recommand Slackware too.

Mandrake/Redhat/Fedora are bloated and slower distros (to my experience).

i'm using debian sid on a PII/266/128mb ram minimal install.

i'd have a look at vector linux (based on slackware) or yeah, slackware itself. both run pretty snappily on my PII ;o) i'd also go with xfce as your desktop env. goooood.
