in order for someone to help you, they would need diagnostic information like the info asked for in this response:

rahul@rahul-HP-Pavilion-dv6-Notebook-PC:~$ sudo ifconfig wlan0 up && ifconfig
wlan0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device

iwconfig

rahul@rahul-HP-Pavilion-dv6-Notebook-PC:~$ iwconfig
wwan0 no wireless extensions.
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.

This is the error. I am able to connect to my internet using "USB Dongle" but NOT using "WiFI". Is that something do with Broadcomm driver ?

Hmmm,

Are other networks showing in the list?

I had a problem where my wifi adapter was disabled by default.

This command fixes it nicely:

Code:
sudo iwconfig
sudo ifup wlan0
If that does it, you can add those commands to startup so you don't have to do it everytime you power on the computer.

OK.
rahul@rahul-HP-Pavilion-dv6-Notebook-PC:~$ sudo ifup wlan0
Ignoring unknown interface wlan0=wlan0.

Also, in software settings, my BROADCOM device is not recognised by Ubuntu. Seems I have to update Broadcom driver. Any help on that. I am new to Ubunto. I shown you the output of all the commands. Mnay thanks for all your help in advace

I was looking at your iwconfig output above:

Substitute wwan0 for wlan0

Just to verify... are you able to get wired network access?

you dont show us the output of your iwconfig command; this information mite be helpful in diagnosing:
Code:
echo uname: && uname -a -m -p && echo lspci: && lspci && echo lsusb: && lsusb && echo lsmod: && lsmod && echo ifconfig: && ifconfig && echo ifconfig -a: && ifconfig -a && echo iwconfig: && iwconfig && echo resolv.conf: && cat /etc/resolv.conf && echo route: && route -n

Broadcom is well supported by Ubuntu.

Can you give us the output of:

Code:
sudo iwconfig
sudo ifup wwan0

It looks to me like you have a connection, it just isn't pulling a valid IP. So, I doubt it is a driver issue.

Actually it was a driver issue so far but I updated the driver in the software tools. It just started working now. Many many thanks for all your help and time. I am not a IT geek but wanted to experiment out of Windows. My take one is that Linux is complicated so far, but then that's the fun in life, de-learning what you have learned and learning new things. Windows shuts your brain completely; Linux opens a whole new world. I will keep coming back to this forum - cheers all you guys - v helpful. Thanks.

Rahul, glad it worked out for you!

My experience with Linux is it's "complicated" at first because it's so different from Windows. Once you use it for a bit, however, you realize the Linux setup is logical and it's Windows that's complicated.

If you could please, mark this thread as resolved and provide a little detail on how you updated the driver. That way it can be of help to the next person with this same problem.

Talking Resolved

Go to Sytem Settings - Software & updates - Drivers -Other Driver

If thebroadcom driver would say as "not recognized" the router wont showup. Intsall all the updated drivers for broadcom driver. The sad part is you need an alternative internet connection (LAN / USB). Dont know if Ubuntu can have all the drivers of Brodcam. It is the Broadcam that is usually uncompatible with Linux. Anu questions - email me rahulchopra82@gmail.com with subject 'Linux driver' - happy to offer my 2 cents of advice.

also like windows vista, linux can suffer from occaisional driver support issues. one way around that is to buy a pc with linux pre-installed (like windows, hp/system-76 isnt gonna' send you a pc with a broken wifi card).
