Cant boot after changing resolution
 

Hello

I have installed Red Hat 9 and im having trouble getting the right resolution. If I use the resolution 800 x 600 everything i just fine, apart from the fact that i dos not look very nice on my screen. When i change the resolution to 1024 x 768 and i reboot the computer the screen kind of goes into power saving mode....

I have tried a lot of things like changing the settings in my bios and updating the Nvidia drivers to my geforce3 card but nothing helps. Its very frustrating because i have spendt several days trying to find a solution to this problem, and im on the edge of giving up.

I am using this hardware:

1800+ AMD athlon
80 GB HD
512 MB DDR RAM
128 Geforce 3
15" TVM screen (model AS5S)

I have 3 questions:

1. How can i fix the problem so i can run the high reslution?
2. How can i change the resolution during startup so i dont need to reinstall Linux everytime i change the resolution?
3. Is this a problem with my geforce3 card or is it a problem with my screen?

I hope very much someone can help me with this problem!!

What's the content of your /etc/X11/XF86config file?

I am not sure about RH9 but in most distro you can change X settings by either manually edit /etc/X11/XF86config, or by running xf86cfg as root. I prefer to run it in text mode which is

# xf86cfg -textmode

TIPS: If you cannot get into the graphical login, try switch to other consoles by the keybind "Alt + Ctrl + F1". You can log in there as root to change the resolution.

Ok - thanks for the help. I managed to edit the XF86Config file with at little help from my new friend called Emacs.

The solution to my problems was to change either the vertical og horisontal freqvencies and now it is up and running - great.
