Canon printer driver installation
 

Hi guys,
I have just done a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.04 on my partners desktop PC and am attempting to get her printer working, so far no luck.
Ubuntu does not list a specific driver for this printer in 8.04
Printer is a Canon laserjet model L1112E according to the label on the printer itself but the printed instruction leaflet calls it a LBP 3000 .
Canon website offers a linux driver for lbp3000 but this newbie has no idea how to install it:o
Any help would be appreciated

According to the Canon website, you need to install Ghostscript first (this should be available in Synaptic Package Manager). Then extract the Canon_CAPT_Linux_V1.90_EN.tar.gz archive. In the created CANON_UK folder navigate to Driver--> Debian. In there you will find two files: cndrvcups-capt_1.90-1_i386.deb & cndrvcups-common_1.90-1_i386.deb. Clicking on those files should bring up the Ubuntu installer.

I think I correctly installed the two driver files as per your instructions but the printer still isn't working. I tried to get the printer to adopt the new installed driver but when I instructed it to print a test page it says its "processing" which means it sits there forever scratching its head........
Only thing I would point out is that the driver files I downloaded (only Linux drivers offered to me for a LBP3000) were slightly different to the ones you mentioned namely 2.00-2 instead of 1.90-1
Should I threaten printer with a large hammer??:tisk:

Maybe a big hug will yield better results :D Try having a look at the logs via the cups web interface. It might give you a clue as to what's going on or not going on in this case. http://localhost:631

I only see versions: 1.60 & 1.90 on the canon website. Where did you get your version from?

The driver download came from the Canon Australia website.
I searched for lbp3000 and under support there was only the 2.00-2 for Linux.
The error/access logs make no sense to me, sorry, look like snail trails:(
Is there any way I can send them to you??
Only new info is that after attempting a few more failed test page prints the printer icon that appeared on top right hand corner of my desktop was suggesting printer lbp3000 may not be connected.....
I have a brand new USB lead so I swapped that onto the printer then into a known working usb port on the PC but that didn't help. It is connected physically anyway.

I don't know how long your log is. You could always highlight all the text, then copy and paste it to pastebin: http://pastebin.com/ Once you've pasted the text, copy the url and post it to this thread. That way others get a chance to chip in and help diagnose what the problem might be.

The only thing you didn't need to do is post anything in the section that says Submit a correction or amendment below. other than that you've done it correctly. When I have more time on my hands I'll go through it and see if I can spot where the problem lies.

I had a thought, perhaps I'm barking up the wrong tree........
This Canon printer was made in 2006.
I searched the forums for comment on the Linux compatibility or otherwise of printer brands and I note that in 2006/7 Linux members regarded Canon as being decidedly anti-Linux.
OK so in 2010 Canon says they have a Linux driver that will work in a 2006 printer, are they to be believed????

Please don't waste your time trying to decipher those printer logs.
We decided the Canon printer was likely never going to work with the probably untested Linux drivers Canon offer.
As others have found out the only printer manufacturer that makes any effort to support Linux users is HP so we bought a new HP printer the specific model being fully supported and tested to work on Linux.
Hopefully this solves the problem.
