Canon MX-870 not responding on LinuxMint DE 16 64 bit

I am not able to get a Canon MX-870 printer to print using LinuxMint DE 16 64 bit. When I install it going through Menu, Administration, Printer Settings and add it and then do a test print it tells me that it is not responding. This method uses the CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.9 driver.

When I try to install it using cups it doesn't find the printer. I am not sure what the printer is called or even what type of network printer it is so when I add it I tell it ipp://192.168.1.100 which is the ip address of the printer.

I have tried installing different respositories but I always get a lot of 404's not found. and then it can't find the driver.

I haven't been able to grab a screen and paste it in here yet or I would have.

The scanning works great using Xsane. I wish there was a program like Xsane for printing. Maybe I am just not ready for Linux.

Canon MX-860 shows up as paperweight, why you think MX-870 is better? You should check with openprinting.org before buying.

Printing

I got it to print using Print Settings. The device url was lpd://192.168.1.100 which got it to print. I was using ipp before and couldn't get it to respond. It is using the Gutenprint v5.2.9 driver. It doesn't automatically sense which tray to use and there are probably other options lacking but it is printing. I will keep trying on the Canon drivers. There are some people who got the MX-870 working using the Canon drivers on a 64 bit machine.
