Canon CP-300 and Gutenprint
 

I am on FC5 and I tried to get my Canon CP-300 USB foto printer to work.

I followed the installation instructions (http://gutenprint.sourceforge.net/gu...ers-manual.pdf) until "make install" and hoped to have the possibility to add a new printer CP-300 then.

Using the CUPS web interface I was able to choose the Canon CP-300 in the first step but then it asks me in a second step of the new printer wizard to choose again a printer and there I do not have the CP-300 in the list any more and the only alternative is provide a ppd file but I cannot find any matching ppd file on the HD after the gutenprint installation.

So I am quite lost what to try next. Any hint?

It does not neccessarily need to be the Gutenprint - if you know another method how I could get the Canon CP-300 to work it is ok also.

When I turn on the printer and refresh the CUPS administration page (http://localhost:631) it tells that two new printers are found:

• Canon CP-300 (Canon CP-300)
• Canon CP-300 (Canon CP-300 USB #1)

When I try to add one of those I get a list presented with a set of Canon printers but the Canon CP-300 is not in the list. All the listed printers have "CUPS+GIMP-Print v4.2.7" in their name. Shouldn't I have Gutenprint there (as GIMP-Print was the former name for Gutenprint)?

I searched (with "find / -name gutenprint") to find out where Gutenprint installed itself into with the following result:
Searching for gimp-print brought:
Should I copy/move the gutenprint to /usr/...?
How can I get the Gutenprint shown in the CUPS admin?
I also searched for PPD files without success (as this is an option to provide a PPD file in the CUPS admin).

I got it to work now - apart from the print quality which remains an issue.

In short words:

• Download Gutenprint from http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...?group_id=1537
• Extract the package (through graphical UI via right mouse button or using commandline).
• Open a console and change to that folder where you extracted the files.
• ./configure --with-cups
• make install

The --with-cups option is the one I didn't use - documentation said that usually everything is recognized automatically but in my case somehow was not the case.

Note: I found only the KView and KuickShow (KDE) applications able to print the correct way because only those applications offer possibility to automatically adjust image to paper size and center the image on the page. With other (gnome) applications I got only a part of a foto printed.

But when using KView I get not a really good quality. Quality is much better when using KuickShow but then I get stripes in the print. :-(

Should I use completely other application(s) for printing?

What are the best viewers around (that offer also more features on printing)? - Which should I try?

Although nobody is answering here on my thread and I am talking to myself I want to give a final reply to let everybody know (who has the same desire to get the Canon Selphy CP-300 foto printer working on Linux):

OpenOffice Draw prints the image correctly on the Canon CP-300 with Gutenprint 5.0.0!

I created two templates - one in landscape postcard (14,8 cm x 10,0 cm) and one in portrait page format. When clicking Insert->Picture->From File... then it automatically resizes the image then to fit into the page (therefore you need to adjust the page format to landscape or portrait before inserting the image).

So I leave this documentation for rest of the people with a Canon CP-300 (or similar) switching to Linux.
