(dameon has died ! ) error reporting log says it cannot tell me why.. my computer is a semperon 2800 512 ram running duel boot with windows xp\linux memorex dvd-rw any help would be appriated.. p.s. I know nothing about linux so please answer gently bob busmanbob@juno.com |
For #1: try to determine how the DVD gets mounted (mount config?) and which filesystem type is on there.
ie: cat /etc/fstab cat /etc/mount (after inserting the DVD) cat /etc/auto.* and post the results. For #2: Have you installed the ATI drivers properly? Your video may simply be working under a generic video card driver. For #3: Please ellaborate: what daemon died? Does it happen all the time, or occasionally? |
OK I am new in LInux also so take it easy.
#1 Xine was installed with mepis? If so then you should be able to find in A FAQ whether xine can play DVD out of the box. If not then there should be a guide how to provide your machine with that ability. Xine can play DVD but I think it needs some plugin. If you have installed xine then you should know if you have put the necesary plugin. I don't think it has to do with mount. I have also problem with playing DVD. For example in Fedora out of the box you can't play DVD, mp3 etc because there are lisense problems. #2 There are special drivers for ATI video card provided by ATI but I guess your pc works without them for basic use (not 3D accelaration but most other programs work ok right?) Consult ATI site #3 I don't know which deamon you refer to... |

Thanks to everyone who replied to my question..... I still don't have a clue as to how and what to do now..... i told you i am greener than grass at this. I have never worked with lixux before.......I am using mepis linux.. bob busdmanbob@juno.com |
Mepis is Debian based, so if it came with Xine then highly unlikely that it'll play DVD and AVI movies.
1. Remove originally installed 2. Add some of the repositories of Debian (DVD and DivX amd MPlayer related)to sources 3. Install again Xine 4. Install libdvdcss (to play encrypted and legal DVD) 5. Install Xvid, DivX, DivXforlinux packages 6. Install MPlayer - optionally PS. Mplayer plays all |

You need to find out which of the 2 you are using and installing the ATI file for that one. Quote:

your right it just may need to be setup right. I don't have a clue as to
how to do it. though.....when I click on xawtv i do not get any error messages at at all. just the little icon jumping up and down that you get when clicking on a program to start. |
So you're using a launcher on your desktop, right?
Try opening the launcher's properties and look for the command it executes. Then, open a terminal window and execute the same command from there. If this causes an error, at least you'll see the error message. An alternative could be to check the log files in /var/log for any messages related to xawtv. |
