Question Cannot start kde after update

Hi all,

I am running Scientific Linux 6.4. I did a

Code:
sudo yum groupinstall "X Window System" "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"
sudo yum install libX11-devel freetype-devel zlib-devel libxcb-devel
and after that my KDE does not start anymore. When I try to start the splash screen of KDE appears for two seconds, and then I go back to GDM.

Also, I created a new user, and I cannot login to KDE as well. Anyway, I am able to login to GNOME.

Here is the output of .xsession-errors, after a fresh start of KDE

Code:
startkde: Starting up...

i am betting you just missed this

Once you type in your user name and BEFORE!!! you type in your password

there is a small pop up menu on the center bottom of the login window

you can choose Gnome / kde / xfce/ ice/ e17 / and so on if they are installed

No, I did not miss what you wrote. I am using that small pop up menu that you mention in order to switch between KDE and GNOME... GNOME works perfectly (but I do not like to work in it) and KDE starts but after two seconds, in the KDE splash dialog, the loading is interrupted and I get back to GDM.

question
you stated a "update"
Quote:
sudo yum groupinstall "X Window System" "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"
sudo yum install libX11-devel freetype-devel zlib-devel libxcb-devel
THAT is not a update !

a update is
Code:
su -
yum update
the installing of X and kde
stated you started with a text only terminal install
then installed x and kde

also check what you really did install from the yum log
and check thet the group names are 100% correct with
Code:
su -
yum grouplist
on my SL 6.5 install kde is " KDE Desktop "
and x is "General Purpose Desktop"

also it is advisable to have installed
"System administration tools"
