Cannot Shutdown/Reboot properly

I'm having a problem with shutdowns and reboots. My system stalls at the printer removal portion of shutdown. I have a HP812C USB printer. I've noticed that the USB is stopped prior to the printer itself......is this the problem? Is this a "known" issue? I'm new to Linux and am certain that the fix is right in front of me. Thanks in advance. I have Mandrake 8.1 installed.

Welcome to LQ, shiu4ia.

You could check the logs to see what was reported as having gone wrong. There are probably plenty of work-arounds, such as making your own shutdown script that unloads the printer stuff first then closes the computer, but it would probably be more helpful if it could be sorted properly.

Take a look at the logs (in /var/log) and post here anything that seems suspicious.

If my memory serves me right, I think there was a bug in 8.1 that caused the freeze when reaching the USB stage.

Check the Mandrake site 'errata' page for the 8.1 version - it had a fix that was a very quick tweak to a file and it was sorted.......

Just in case you didn't get that far yet:

The solution worked for me.
