Cannot see .htaccess and .htpasswd files

I've uploaded some .htaccess and .htpasswd files to my dedicated server running Red Hat 7.2, Apache 1.3.26, OpenSSH and WuFTP server and for some reason they don't show up when I am in my FTP or SSH program. I can see them in the directory index on my browser though.

Can somebody tell me what I need to do to be able to view them in FTP and SSH?

Also, whenever I click on either file in the browser, it shows me the contents of the files. How can I disable this?

Are you using any type of program to FTP into the site. Usually by default programs won't show hidden files, in which a period in from of a file name in *nix is hidden.
If your FTP'ing from a DOS or *nix command prompt, you can just issue a ls -al and it will display all the files in a given directory, also applies for ssh.

The FTP and SSH programs both show these types of files on my other web hosting accounts on different shared hosting servers. For some reason, when I go into my dedicated server with WS_FTP or SecureCRT, the files don't show up, so it must be some setting on the server.
