Cannot run startx anymore...

Hi,

I am using IBM NetVista PIV with 128MB/Intel 845 Mbd/8 MB Shared Video Memory and Redhat Linux 9. I always start in CUI and X was working good untill yesterday when I pressed Ctrl+Alt+F1 and invoked prompt. After that my X is not working for some reason. When I startx, it appears with blank screen and show my monitor (LG 17" 700S) frequency range box and comes right back to prompt. I attempted reconfiguring X with 800x600, thousand colours, selected monitor as probed (700S, 49 dpi, and default mm), video card is autodected as i810 and Video Memory selected 8 MB. It does not work. I also created new XF86config.new on root for no good. I also attempted reinstalling Desktop Package items from Installation CDs, but no help.

I read /var/log/messages, but could not understand much. dmesg does not contain any information that I could use. I can attach /var/log/XFree86.0.log, and XF86Config files herewith for your information.

Please help me get it fix asap.

Thanks and regards,

Navinchandra.

when you hit ctrl+alt+f1, you switched to one of the root terminals on your local machine. Before you start X, you can switch between these terminals (at least in debian) by pressing alt+f1, alt+f2, etc.. I think there are 8, f1 through f8. After you start X, you can switch back to these terminals with ctrl+alt+f1 (or ctrl+alt+f2, etc.). X itself usually runs in terminal 7, so you probably could have switched back to X by hitting alt+f7.

The question is this: does X fail to start now? Or just fail to come up? If it just sits there and does nothing, you could try the alt+f7 or alt+f8 trick. If it drops you back to a shell prompt after you run startx, then you've left X in a bad state when you killed it before. Fixing that can be a royal pain. If a simple reboot doesn't fix it, you might have to trace through the X startup scripts to find exactly where things are failing. Or re-install X.

It can also be that you have a monitor with an analog and a digital cable and you have put both in the computer, if this is so you can try to switch "monitor" by pressing the button with a 'monitor and a arrow' on your monitor
