Cannot restart xserver back into KDE

When I am running KDE and want to restart the xserver, I hit ctrl-alt-bckspc and get the login screen, where I can log into any desktop I want except for KDE. The only way to get back into KDE is to reboot. This has happened before, and went away with a fresh installation, but since I've reinstalled the system several times since getting suse 9 a few weeks ago, I think I need to spend more time posting/troubleshooting rather than kneejerk reinstalling.

If you "had" the problem, what did you do about it?

you got a GeForce? I'm having probs too.
Sometimes hangs just before booting and have to reset.
Sometimes hangs on ctrl-alt-bkspace and a touch of the power button
does it.
on my laptop AND ON MY desktop, both suse 9.0 + geforce.

Anyway,

try doing 'ctrl-alt-F1' for 'dos' window
login as root
do

'init 2'
'init 5'

This is not a solution but may be quicker than a reboot (if it works), and you can
learn about run levels!

Talking init 5 hangs

Hello,

I've just experienced the same I think.

I did a init 3 from runlevel 5 and than did a init 5 again and KDE hangs.

I've find out that there are a cuople kdeinit processes that are not killed.

So I edited /etc/rc.d/xdm and in the STOP section I added the line:

kill -9 `ps -e|grep kdeinit | awk '{print $1}' `

And this works fine for me, the process are removed when kde is shutdown from runlevel 5 to 3 and now a startup works like a dream.

Hope this helps for you?
