Cannot record voice/audio

Hi

I am unable to record voice(not a microphone problem), but i can play audio.
I used the following commands

To record:
$ cat /dev/audio > temp.au

To play:
$ cat recorded.au > /dev/audio

The above command works very fine, but the record thing doesnot work. When I tried it on RH 9 on a lower end PC, both record and play work well.

My motherboard: Intel DQ965GF with integrated soundcard(onboard)
Distro: FC6

When i check my gnome-volume-control ( volume control ) i have only 2 tabs on that volume control window:

1st tab>> Title: Playback
Volume slider for left and right channels
Button for mute/unmute volume

2nd tab>> Title: capture
Digital1 slider saying "volume of mono channel on digital 1"
button for "mute/ unmute Digital-1"
button for "Toggle audio capture from Digital-1"

What are the drivers(if any) needed to install?

Thanks in advance
krishna

You need a newer version of alsa. You can find it at alsa-project.org. While that system has been supported since alsa-driver-1.0.12, I recommend getting the latest 1.0.14rc2 (1.0.13 had some issues).

I have the DP965LT, and when I wrote the driver, I was testing on all of the 965 motherboards from Intel (I was a contract employee there at the time), so I know that it will work.
