Cannot mount Seagate External Drive

The Story:

My laptop has had a warning regarding a upcoming hard drive failure, my usual OS is MS XP, and I eventually going to get a external drive to back-up my files.

Earlier today, my OS decided to act like Microsoft does; stupid. It won't boot the OS up. I have (and am using right now) a back-up OS a friend told me to have a while back; Knoppix v.3.4 running off cd. I bought the external drive, planning to transfer my files; it had worked when I would transfer smaller files to my 64mb flash drive.

The external drive is connected via USB, and is detected by Knoppix.

The Problem:

When I click on the external drive icon, on the desktop I receive the following error:

Quote:

Could not mount device.
The reported error was:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1,
or too many mounted file systems
I have tried what I thought would work, but I am very unfamiliar with this OS. If anyone have any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

Since this is a new drive, are you sure that the drive is already formatted with a filesystem?

I tested it on my roommates computer in XP, it worked, and was able to store files.

What does fdisk -l show? If the filesystem is formated as NTFS, then format it as FAT32.
