Cannot lock user/lib error in mandrake?

Hi,
I am very new to linux, I just installed it a day ago... when I visit the "Manage Users" or "userdrake" for adding new users or to change permission access after 1 or two minutes the window for "manage users" automatically get closed and when I again start it, it give me the following error:

Cannot lock user/lib file /etc/ptmp or /etc/gtmp exist

I also try this out my rebooting the PC as well as login as "root" and as normal user...but it did not get correct.. when ever I delete these two files i-e "gtmp" and "ptmp" it works! I am very confused... :(

Thanks...

Might things work better if you used 'useradd' (is it?) and 'chmod' (for changing permissions) at a terminal?:)
