You're getting error messages.. ok. It'd help if you posted them. Also, what happens when you try to play audio CDs? More error messages? If so, post those as well.

do post your slackware distribution too........(and better have it there below your name for easy reference ).

type alsamixer on the command prompt then m to unmute channels and the up and down keys to raise and lower volume. Then when your done press esc and as root type alsactl store.

If you want to be able to hear audio as a user you need to be in the audio group. You can use kuser in kde or gnomes graphical user tool to put yourself in the audio group. Also put youself in these groups video,floppy,mem,kmem,cdrom.disk. That will make some things easier to access as a user.

Code:

$su -
$alsamixer
Configure bars with arrows, enable or disable service with "m" key.
When done ESC
#alsactl store

If you have 5.1 speaker system, be sure that LFE channels bars are all way down and [off]. LFE channel is to generate 5.1 emulation matrix on 4 speaker systems.
;)

P.S. KEEP IN MIND THAT SOUND SYSTEM WON'T WORK AFTER THAT PROCEDURE. REBOOT NEEDED!

You do not need to mount audio CDs. As for "mp3 CDs", I assume you mean you just have .mp3 files on a normal CD-R/CD-RW as a data disk? What kind of errors are you getting when you try to mount one of those?
