cannot install .tar files


hi,
i am a newbie to linux and tried installing .tar files. The real problem is that the ./configure command doesnt work and reports error.

Further i installed real player .rpm file. After the installation is complete i am not able to locate the application.


Pls help me .

Providing those errors kind of tells us more details of what the problem might be? And after you install the rpm for realplayer, did you try locating it? Most of the time the executable is simply named after the package.. like.. realplayer

in a terminal type
which realplay
and where it is will be the output.
it's probably in the path, so typing it's name in a x term will run it.

the configure command is checking your system to see if what it needs to compile the package is present. if you get an error, you are missing what it says you are missing.
