Cannot Install Some Software with CentOS 5.2

I am trying to extract a rar file, and I found on Google that in order to do that in Linux you can use something called unrar. However when I tried to run a yum install command I got this message:

Code:
Loading "fastestmirror" plugin
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
 * extras: dds.gina.alaska.edu
 * updates: mirror.atlantic.net
 * base: ftp.ussg.iu.edu
 * c5-media:

 * addons: centos.cs.wisc.edu
 * adobe-linux-i386: linuxdownload.adobe.com
file:///media/CentOS/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 5] OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/media/CentOS/repodata/repomd.xml'
Trying other mirror.
file:///media/cdrecorder/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 5] OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/media/cdrecorder/repodata/repomd.xml'
Trying other mirror.
file:///media/cdrom/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 5] OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/media/cdrom/repodata/repomd.xml'
Trying other mirror.
Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: c5-media. Please verify its path and try again
Anybody know why I can't install the software, and how I can fix this error? Thanks in advance for any help.

Well you don't neccesarily need to use yum to get the unrar program.

You can also download it manually and compile / install it yourself. Google for "linux unrar" and download and install the package.

If you need more info or you can't find the unrar package, feel free to mail me at

lq at polard dot com

and I'll talk you through it. It is not as easy as yumming it down, but it is still fairly trivial.

Looks to me, like it's trying to access the CD/DVD used to install the system.. is it inserted in the drive ?

If you no longer wish to use the CDROM/DVD to add/update packages I would remove it from your repository list.

Code:
file:///media/CentOS/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 5] OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/media/CentOS/repodata/repomd.xml'
Trying other mirror.
file:///media/cdrecorder/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 5] OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/media/cdrecorder/repodata/repomd.xml'
Trying other mirror.
file:///media/cdrom/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 5] OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/media/cdrom/repodata/repomd.xml'
Trying other mirror.

.rar is unfortantly a proprietary (and patented) format, you are unlikely to find it in most forms of linux and on most of their repositories because it could leave them vulnerable from a legal perspective so to speak. Should the company that owns the format want to charge for usage like unisys did with the .gif image format for example.

Trying other mirror.
Well I don't want to use the CD or DVD, so I removed those 2 lines from /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-media.repo. All I have now is this:

Code:
[c5-media]
name=CentOS-5 - Media
baseurl=file:///media/CentOS/
gpgcheck=1
enabled=1
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-CentOS-5
However I tried to do another yum install, and I got the same error message but all it said was this:

Code:
file:///media/CentOS/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 5] OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/media/CentOS/repodata/repomd.xml'
Trying other mirror.
Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: c5-media. Please verify its path and try again
Should I change my baseurl to something other than a local file?

True rar is not free software, but I've never had trouble finding it in standard repositories.

Code:
it-etch:~$ apt-cache policy unrar
unrar:
  Installed: 1:3.8.2-1
  Candidate: 1:3.8.2-1
  Version table:
 *** 1:3.8.2-1 0
        500 http://ftp.uwsg.indiana.edu lenny/non-free Packages
Should be fairly simple to install in RHEL/CentOS 5.x

wget http://dag.wieers.com/rpm/packages/unrar/unrar-3.7.4-1.el5.rf.i386.rpm
rpm -Uvh unrar-3.7.4-1.el5.rf.i386.rpm

Could always add Dag Wieers as a repository to your system, so you could then install using yum..

http://dag.wieers.com/rpm/packages/unrar/
Quote:
Dag Wieers RPM packages for Red Hat, RHEL, CentOS and Fedora RPM packages unrar RPM packages for Red Hat, CentOS and Fedora
unrar RPM packages for Red Hat, CentOS and Fedora
Extract, test and view RAR archives.

The unRAR utility is a freeware program, distributed with source code and developed for extracting, testing and viewing the contents of archives created with the RAR archiver version 1.50 and above.

Latest release: 3.7.4-1

I am unfamiliar with adding repositories in CentOS You could check the docs ..

I think anything that references the local /media folder is looking for a local package source..

http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/yum/

I downloaded the RPM package like you said farslayer and it worked great, installed with no problems. That link to the diag wieers rpm packages site is great and has tons of packages, I just don't know how to add it as a repository... but I will keep it in mind for future rpm's.
