Cannot install Libreoffice-3.5.1.1-2 . fc17
 

I am not savy enough to install Libreoffice-3.5.1.1-2.fc17
on Fedora 17 gnome 5.4.2
Need very simple instructions please.

Check in your Package Manager by typing in the search bar 'Libreoffice'

If Libreoffice is already in your package manager just right click it and install by clicking install.

WHY "3.5.1" ?????
Why install the OLD version on fedora 17 ???????

Linux - rpm (x86_64), version 3.6.2

that is the current

then from that list go-office should be listed
the default version of office on fedora


but if you must
go to the libreoffice web site
download the rpm package and READ the INSTALL instructions
they ARE INCLUDED in the tar.gz archive
read it !!!

I did go to the libreoffice web site and downloaded the rpm package. The instructions, at one point said to change the directory to "the "desktop-integration" directory that is within the "RPMS" directory, using the following command:

cd desktop-integration"

when I do this I get "bash: cd: desktop: no such directory."

I got the first part to install, but without being able to change directories, I cannot get the second part to install.

What am I missing?

you are using a gui( gnome3)
on the r-click menu should be a "open terminal here"
just like on windows 7 ( win7 also has that option now )


you can open a terminal IN the folder you are looking at

to quote the README
as to the " cd desktop-integration " command a few lines down
you do that FROM the folder you WERE in
if you are looking at the folder " LibO_3.5.7_Linux_x86-64_install-rpm_en-US/RPMS "
you WILL see that there is a folder called " desktop-integration "

I am lost though, I am using the terminal to install the RPM files. I am a beginner at this stuff. Since there wasn't a package to open I though I could use the yum to install the bug-fixed edition of libreoffice.
Where would I access this right-click menu?
That would be great because I could see what all is inside the Fedora 17.

on the mouse -- the SAME way you would on MS Windows

you do have Gnome3 installed ??? ( the default desktop environment on fedora)

You DO have a GUI installed ???? right ?? Gnome 3 is default , or KDE4 or XFCE or LXDE
if not you will not be able to use libreoffice

the gui basically works like "windows explorer" on Windows
it is a Desktop environment

I will be a little gentler, you can pick any clear space on the desktop to move your mouse cursor too, then right click on that open desktop space (outside of other apps) then pick terminal. You should then be able to use the console for command line(cli) for whatever task(s) you wish to perform. Please be aware that a normal user will have limited system based commands. I have GUI installed. Dad got the latest version of Fedora 17. No, I cannot get anything up by right clicking on the desktop. I do not get a menu or anything. That would have been nice. Nope, no KDE4 or XFCE or LXDE. Dad likes the simple interface of Gnome.
I will look at the Linux Admin Nubie Guide.

I wish they would just fix the bug in LibreOffice and repackage it so that I gould install the whole thing for Dad.

check the fedora forum for configuring gnome3

there are only a few and a small number of people that LIKE gnome3 ( and the fedora development team is among them )

but
why not just cd to the install folder ?

fedora should be defaulting to the users Home folder "Downloads" folder
/home/YourUserName/Downloads
or
~/Downloads
then cd into the libre office folder
( you do know of the <tab> button auto word complete ??)
type in the first two letters then hit the <tab> button
one time for a list
twice to use a unique name

so to get from the RPMS folder to the desktop integration folder
type in a lowercase "d" ( the folder as you can see in the gnome folder window has a lowercase "d" as it first letter )
and hit the <tab> button ---- saves typing most of the time
then run the command that is in the install instructions

but for ONLY one rpm there is NO NEED to even type

in gnome just DOUBLE CLICK it
The SAME way you would on MS Windows -- the EXACT SAME WAY )
and let the install manager install it


this works great for one or two files

-- not good for a folder full

You should have LibreOffice 3.5.2.1 installed from the CD or DVD. Does it not show up in the menu? You say that you're using the terminal to install rpm files. Why aren't you using the software installer? I think you need to tell us exactly how you come to have no LibreOffice and exactly what you've been doing to try and get it. At the moment, I'm in the dark. For example, the version you mention is not in the Fedora repository and not listed at the LibreOffice website.

@ onebuck. Click on the screen to get a menu? Carla's using the Gnome desktop, not Blackbox!
