Cannot get thunderbird to take my password

I have installed ubuntu 8.4 and have been trying to install thunderbird. I have thunderbird installed but I cannot get it to accept my password.I can receive email but everytime I try to send it keeps on wanting my password. I have confirmed that the server is right and I know the password is right. I have tried everything. I would like to delete my profile and try that if no one has any suggestions for solving my problem. I have a problem in finding my profile because I do not know enough about linux file system.

Are you sure you need to authenticate to send email ?

If so what type of authentication does the server want ? Are you trying to access gmail or yahoo mail ? need more information ...

I am trying to use thunderbird. I have gmail working but that uses a different password. I don't think my server requires authentication unless the password is the quthentication. I think a problem might be my profile. I do not understand the linux directory enough to find it.

Depending on your system and/or mail server configuration your user-password pair for getting e-mails is not necessarily the same as your user-password pair for sending e-mails. For sending e-mails you need access to an SMPT account.

I tried the same password that I am using for Outlook Express with no luck. I used the same password for evolution mail which is part of ubuntu and it worked. It has to be something wrong with the thunderbird. I have uninstalled thunderbird and reinstalled it but it keeps my old profile. I cannot find my profile because I do not know the linux directory system.

If you do not need to use your username and password to send email but it's prompting you, then try this: go to the menu at the top and select Edit - Account Settings - Outgoing Server (SMTP), click on the name of your outgoing mail server, hit "edit" button and under the "Security & Authentication" heading uncheck "use name and password".

Inbox - thunderbird

I finally got my thunderbird so that I can send and receive email. I have it setup so that I can also send and receive gmail. I am having one problem and that is in the inbox for thunderbird it only shows my normal email address. Can I set it up so that my gmail will show up in another folder? How do I setup a gmail folder and another folder for my other account?

Edit - Account Settings - Server Settings, click the "advanced" button under the heading "server settings" and select "inbox for this server's account".
