Cannot get slack 12.0 to connect to wireless network

Hey everyone

I Recently installed madwifi on my slack 12.0 (running KDE) and i ran the modprobe ath_pci command. when i executed the ifconfig command, my wifi card appears in the output, but i still cannot get an actual connection to the wifi network. The network is security-enabled. Do you think that is the reason why my laptop cannot connect to the wifi network? Also is there anyway to configure linux (or at least KDE or whatever environment one uses) to connect to security enabled wireless networks? In other words, what do I use to initially connect to the wireless router so i can enter my WEP key and be able to connect to the network?

Distro has come of age, don't even know which KDE version you got,
but try kwifimanager
