cannot get samba to work.

have a suse 8.2 linux machine on connected to the router.
i can ping it from any other windows machine
i can browse a site hosted on it from any machine on the network

but i cannot see the linux machine and its shares on the windows network.

the network computers are all part of a domain MYDOMAINNAME.COM (all caps)
no work group...

in teh smb.comf file
for workgroup i put workgroup = MYDOMAINNAME

or should i put MYDOMAINNAME.COM??

anyway...

also ive seen on one link that i should put
"smb password file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd"

when i do this..
and do a testparm

it gives me..."uknown parameter "smb password file"
"ignoring ..."blahblah

well i dont know what the problem is...
except that I cannot ... get this shit working.

i just want to get to the shares on the linux.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

since i cant get samba to work, the next best thing to do would be to get FTP going

vsftp...
how the hell do i set it up. i beeen looking all over.
i try just connecting via ftp client to the linux machine

it connects but goes to some unamed directory...
if i try to move files in ...it gets denied.

if i can connect that means the ftp server is working right?
if it is working? how can i set it to go to where i want ?

i want to ftp itno a directory in teh webserver under htdocs.

anyone?

SAMBA

use the diagnostics.txt file off Samba.org site, users made in the users and groups as well as SWAT. Don't forget to enable the users with the SWAT user page. Is nmbd running?
