Cannot get rid of grub rescue

My IT officer tried to re-format the hard drive of my new Ubuntu netbook in order to install Windows 7. Seems he was successful with the re-format but now the message at startup reads

error: unknown filesystem.
grub rescue>

I can't get rid of this command. I am trying to boot from an external CD-ROM drive but it never gives me the option. Can anybody tell me the way forward from here?

I am unfamiliar with Ubuntu and linux.

Did you install windows 7 ?
GRUB is written in MBR .
Normally installing windows will overwrite GRUB .
But maybe it is different on you're netbook

What is the brand and model of the netbook?

What you need to be able to do is to enter the BIOS setup utility and change the BIOS boot priority to prefer the externel HD.

We never got to the installation point (of windows). In effect, this is just a freshly re-formatted drive.

If you have not come so far that you have install windows than we to install it
Each computer has a key to be pressed to enter the BIOS setup .
Sometimes it is the Escape key sometimes it is the delete key .
You have to press this key during start up .
If you have find this key or combination of keys change the boot sequence in that way that CD drive is the first boot drive and the HD the second ,and than install windows .
But the manufacture or retailer should know with key you have to press

To access the BIOS setup with this netbook you hold the [del] key during POST.

Then use the arrows to change to the boot menu.

Then move to the Boot Device Priority item.
