I think you should a lot more info. What distro what you have done what caused the problem???

On a similar problem I had with Ubuntu 12.04LTS this is what I did

sudo chown -R $USER:$USER $HOME

Hit enter, type my password and hit enter again.
Then log out and press Alt+F7 to log out and log back in with my original user and it worked fine.
