/dev/sda1

can you cd /media/externaldrive

ok, i scanned the:
mount
output, and couldn't see the:
/dev/sda1
which is the name of the hard drive and couldn't see it. If you want, I could copy the list out, but it's quite long.

no it should tell you where it,s mounted

example

/dev/sdd5 on /media/2c02c257-4735-42fb-803e-7e21477279af type ext4 (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=udisks)

ok plug it in the windows box make sure it loads in there ok

plug it in to the windows pc make sure drive is working ok, you said you are using a winows 7 machine

no, i'm running vista, but I know the drive works, I tested it before plugging it into the Pi.
