Cannot get into Ubuntu 9.10

Hello.

Upgraded from Ubuntu 9.04. I couldn't get past the splash screen which kept reloading (saw a message flash briefly about screen resolution). I got as far as getting an error message saying that the gnome-power-management was not installed correctly. Googled this and found that I could try removing gnome-power-manager, which I did.

Now, instead of getting the splash screen over and over again, the computer slowly makes its way to the login screen (which takes an eternity). Once I do punch in my login, this times it loops back into the login screen.

I have yet to make it in to try 9.10.

On 9.04, I had an issue with something like this. Ubuntu only worked when I could see at the boot screen: "Unable to load Description Tables". I don't see that message anymore since the upgrade.
(I remember something about ACPI or APCI but I'm not sure if that helps any.)

Thank you.

At the grub menu when booting, press 'e' on the first kernel, delete the quiet and splash options at the end, and put acpi=off.

This will hopefully at least give you a clue as to what is going on during boot.

Weird

Thanks for replying.

I took away the "quiet" on the kernel. There wasn't any splash screen. I can't seem to get the line acpi=off to stick.

To explain a little more: When I boot-up, I get the Ubuntu splash screen and then a small white terminal window in the upper-left corner of the screen. I can't get to the desktop. I can only do so if I load the "recovery mode" kernel. I type "startx" and the desktop comes up; but then I do something (like maximizing the synaptic window) and I get the mouse pointer (that doesn't move) with a total black screen. Total crash.

??

The grub configuration is usually stored in the file /boot/grub/menu.lst ; to make acpi=off stick, you need to edit that file (with root privileges).

ronlau9 11-01-2009 05:09 AM

I thought in UBUNTU 9.10 it is stored in boot.cfg

Wim Sturkenboom 11-01-2009 07:20 AM

You might well be right. I heard that they switched to Grub 2 and read somewhere that the config file indeed has a different name.

I have no experience with 9.10

Bratmon 11-01-2009 08:26 AM

But the OP upgraded, thus he didn't change the bootloader at all so it's still menu.lst.

It only changes for fresh installs.

Disabling IRQ #9

I got to change the /boot/grub/menu.lst and removed the "quiet" and "splash". Didn't change much except for a few lines.

Saw the line Disabling IRQ #9 ??

Don't know what it means.
