Cannot get generic modem to work with KPPP

I've got an emachines computer with a generic modem that I'm trying to connect to the internet using KPPP. I installed Morphix 0.41 with KDE 3.1 to my hard drive from a live cd. I've been working with the settings in KPPP and have had some success, but ultimately when I try to connect it never goes past the "initializing modem" phase. The machine knows it's there on /ttyS0. I've even tried writing a modem script but it still doesn't seem to work. Is there anything you can think of that I might try?

Are you absolutely sure the your modem is on com1, ttyS0. ttyS0 and ttyS1 would usually be reserved for your built in serial ports on you mobo. then the next avialable serial goes to the modem. Or Sometimes modems prefer and will only work on certain com ports like ttyS3.

shell$ dmesg | less

and look at your modem and see what port it is really using.

I am certain that is the correct port, because when I use the testing feature it checks out. I've tried every other port combination possible and that is the only one that registers anything, despite the fact that KDE can't initialize my modem. Does anyone have any other ideas?

If you have mincom installed you can try to "talk" to your modem to see how it responds. For example, type "atz" and hit enter, the response should be "OK".

I am not sure what you mean by "generic" modem. Is it a real modem or a "winmodem" that needs special drivers provided by windows. Linux can now support many of the "winmodem"s, but not all.
