cannot find mysqld.stock

I've looked through all the similar threads to no avail.
this is what i know so far:
when i
Code:

run mysqladmin -u root -p status
I get this:
Code:

mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' exists!

So I checked and there is no mysqld.sock file.
I also checked the /tmp directory as others have suggested but its not in there either.

I ran
Code:

sudo whereis mysql.sock.
to try and find it but it just returned
Code:

mysql.sock:
The problem seems to have started after I updated form Ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04.
I'm at a loss can anyone please help me.
thanks

Hi,

did you confirm that the server is actually running? Have you read the mysql server log files?
