cannot execute binary file in running ferret 6.8 on linux fedora4

Hello all,
I'm a beginner in linux and also new to LQ. first to say hello to the group and then proposing my problem:
I'm trying to install ferret on my linux fedora4 (bash),but although I go step by step with installation user guide at the end I see this error: csn not execute binary file, this is my path: /home/fedora/software/ferret/bin/ferret

as is mentioned in user guide, I have to make a directory to put ferret_paths in it and then entering this command:
% source $SET_FER/ferret_paths

Access to Ferret and its supporting routines is through the addition of `$FER_DIR/bin' to your PATH environment variable. This addition will be done automatically when the command `source $SET_FER/ferret_paths' is issued.

Ferret can now be run by entering

% ferret
but when I enter ferret in the command line it shows that error.
does anyone know why?
thank you

I don't know anything about ferret, but I would point out that trying to use a distro that old is bound to cause issues.
Fedora is currently on v20.
Perhaps if you tried that or any other current distro, life would be much easier.
Also, consider the security issues....
