cannot enter GUI mode with geforce fx5200

hi
i could not perform the installation in gui mode nor can i login in to gui mode(after installation). in order to install linux i inserted th 1st bootable disc and it gave me two options to install: 1)insatll in graphical mode , 2)insatll in text mode.
Now, when i opted for the first choice, after around 10-15 seconds of processing the monitor went to standby. after a lot of trial and error methods i finally came to know that a combi od ctrl+alt+f1 could bring back the monitor from standby. then i restarted the setup in text mode and completed the whole process in text mode. After insatllation i restarted and got to the grub boot loader. now i am able to load linux and everything was going well untill the login promt came, the screen blinked and after 2 seconds it came back to this these screens:
1
2
fter that it tries to start my display with the vesa driver
3
the result was same as the previous one.

i am able to login to root but only in text mode .
will this problem be solved if i cofigure the x-server manually?? if yes how do i do that??
linux version : redhat linux 9
agp card : nvidia geforce fx5200 (8x agp,128mb)
m/b : intel 865p

i beleive none of the other hardware is incompatible coz everthing else works fine.

You can try to fix that, but a large part of the problem is that RedHat 9 is ANCIENT by linux standards. They moved RedHat to Fedora Core years ago, and Fedora Core 4 is now out. So you are dealing with an OS that is 4 generations old. The Geforce 5200 series probably wasn't even out when RH9 shipped. I strongly suggest getting a new OS, and trying that. It is very likely that it will detect and deal with your card just fine during the install, making youe life much easier.

Peace,
JimBass

PCLinuxOS is great for this reason. You can download an ISO for your video card type (ATI or NVIDIA). It is a live CD, so burn it and boot it. Give it a test drive, once everything looks good, you can install to your hard disk.

Good luck,
eric

1.5 years fooling with RH9.

You are patient aren't you. I pity anyone whom you get a hate-on for.
