cannot boot to mandrake 9.0 after upgrade

After upgrading from Mandrake 8.1 to 9.0, I can no longer boot to Mandrake.

The computer would run bios and then print the letters LI (LILO trying to start?) and then freeze. I booted off the Mandrake 9.0 CD, choose the console through F1 and then typed 'rescue'. This gave me the option to 'restore my Windows MBR', which I did, so I can again boot to Windows. (It's a dual boot system.)

I tried booting off my old LILO disk (the boot disk for the system before I upgraded from 8.1). It starts to boot, but then freezes after the message 'unable to open console'. Should I be able to use my boot disk created when I installed 8.1?

I tried booting off the cd and running through the upgrade procedure in expert mode, however, the results were the same. (can't boot). In both the regular and expert mode, I get an error message when it is trying to install the boot loader, and also when it tries to create a boot disk.

When 8.1 was working, I was using GRUB, not LILO. I recall that LILO would not work, but I could boot off my installation disk and then I installed GRUB, which worked fine - I don't know if that is relevant.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Well when I tried to make a boot floppy in Mdk9 I didnt work, but you can boot off the cd as you say you've already done. Seems that cant repair/reinstall Lilo though. What windows are you trying to dual boot with?

LI is an error code, see this thread

Thanks for the reply - how do I boot linux off the mandrake 9.0 CD? I only know how to boot off the CD and then go through the reinstall routine again or go into the 'rescue' console.

Try Rescue, then Reinstall Lilo. It worked for me, but I dunno about you as you seems to have problems with installing the bootloader. Again which windows version are you dual booting with? Or are you just trying to run Mandrake?

I'm dual booting with XP. As I mentioned before, the dual boot was working fine before, using GRUB. (LILO didn' t work).

I tried to boot off the Mandrake CD again, use rescue mode and reinstall LILO. After pressing pressing enter to rewrite LILO I got the error that:

Fatal: open /dev/hda: No such file or directory press return to Rescue GUI.

Any ideas how to get it booted at all? I imagine that if I could get into Linux, I could install grub and then it would work.

Cheers!

Hmm, maybe GRUB will have better luck installing into your MBR. XP is on your primary hard drive right?
As you are using an NT/XP variation of windows, I suspect that's the cause of Lilo not working. It's ok with win95/98/ME iirc.

Anyone with some idea what they're doing?
