cannot boot from cd-drive
 

Dear Sir, Ever since I booted Ubuntu from the CD-Drive I can no longer boot from it.I put Windows XP on new 40 gb hard drive first , then Ubuntu . I have a HP Pavillion ZE4600 laptop. I start comp. then press F2 to enter set up to make "CD Boot" the priority.That used to work before I installed Ubuntu.The CD-Drive works, but seems that Ubuntu Is not letting it anymore.Now when I enter esc, it tells me to press control+ alt+B, but nothing happens, & it goes to screen for choosing Windows or Ubuntu.When Ubuntu starts to boot, the background appears, and the music? plays, but that's all that happens.I hold the power button down to turn off,go through the process again , and Ubuntu loads all the way , and I can use it.But after time it will "lock" on me.I try to do a system test, & it "locks" again.I have to manually reboot the computer when it "locks". When I use internet it works okay.I wanted to try to reload the Ubuntu OS CD, but need to know how to get the drive to read it. First, there are not just "Sir"'s on here.

And based on what you've said, there's no way that ANY OS can prevent a BIOS event from taking place, due mostly in part to the operating system not being loaded. When you power off the computer and restart it, there is NOTHING running...no Ubuntu, no Windows...nothing. So if your computer can't boot from the CD drive, it's due to one of these reasons:

• The CD/DVD you put in isn't bootable
• The CD/DVD you put in isn't readable/corrupted
• You changed the boot order to exclude it
• You disabled the controller in BIOS
• You set another drive up to conflict with it in the chain
• The drive is broken

Your inability to boot from CD has nothing to do with Ubuntu, or Windows.

One of my computers actually doesn't support certain cd's booting, but it's an older machine.
Depending on how old the machine is, you might need floppy support or change cd drive. Mainly systems before 2003.

BTW it did boot Debian's boot loader!
