Cannot attach/upload JPEG files through any website. Other file formats are fine.

I have just switched to Linux Mint 7 (Gloria) from OpenSuse 11. All things seem to work but one.

I cannot upload .jpg files to any website nor attach them in gmail. In flickr I have tried both web clients for uploading. I have tried the Desktop Flickr Organizer and Flickr Uploader apps to no avail.

I have had no problem attaching other file formats (.doc and .odt) in gmail; they work just as you'd expect. .Jpg uploads just sit. Neither flickr nor gmail return any error message; they just don't complete the process even if hours pass (yes, I've tried hours.)

I have been able to upload .jpg files using another OS through the same wireless connection.

Thanks for any advice! Let me know what kind of additional information would help you to help me!

I see you refer to ".Jpg" files (capital J) or is that just the start of the sentence?

I. e. it SHOULD not make a difference, but ensure the files have an extension of ".jpg" (small letter J)

Other than that your problem sounds VERY weird. I regularly upload files from my FC11, .jpg files too, and have been doing so for years from RH9, FC3, FC6, FC10...

Do you maybe have some kind of firewall or proxy between you and the sites you want to upload to? All I can think that might behave in the way you describe is if you have some kind of firewall or anti-viral software between you and your targets, and that they are filtering out .jpg files.

I'm currently using the same distro and have no issues at all.

Make sure you have Java JRE and bin version 6 installed!

Thanks for your replies, rylan76 and arckane. The .jpg is just capitalized for the beginning of the sentence, although GIMP did save the files with the capitals in the suffix. I changed it to lower case when I first encountered the problem. Also, I have no firewall enabled currently and unless there's an antivirus running by default in the background, that shouldn't be a problem either. (Don't have the machine with me to check.)

Arckane, I'll check when I get home, but is java advice directed at the default uploader in flickr and gmail? In flickr I've tried the default and the basic uploaders. Gmail only gives me the one option. I don't know what the two desktop uploaders that I've installed are doing behind the scenes.

Thanks again!

NOW that is VERY ODD .
gimp on linux SHOULD NOT DO THAT .
by chance are you using the MS Windows gimp with "wine"
how did you install gimp ?
right click on the "jpg" file and CHECK the properties to see if it is really a jpg file .( you might need to rename the photo by removing the ".jpg" extension first )

This is a fabulous mystery!

John VV, running the version of GIMP that is part of the default install of Linux Mint 7 (Gloria), not through WINE. The .jpg files show as jpeg files in the properties, as well.

I have found that I can save the jpegs as .tif files and flickr will accept them. I'd rather not have to do that, but it makes this problem less of a distro killer for me.

Thanks for all responses. I'll keep updating if I find new wrinkles to the problem.

Are you on Facebook?

You've gotten a workaround for your problem sure, but what you describe should not happen - if you try and upload one of the .jpg files to Facebook, with their "simple upload thinger", does it work, or does it fail too?

The "simple upload thinger" has been working fine for me for .jpg files from FireFox in FC6, FC9, FC10 and FC11.

It -might- be something not all to do with Linux, i. e. the websites you mention might do browser checks or operating system checks on connected browsers and then refuse to accept certain filetypes from certain browsers for some reason?

I. e. if the .jpg upload works with the Facebook "thinger" you know that your distro is not the culprit, it is the particular website you are trying to upload to...

New theory: wireless fluctuation

Alright, the TIFF image I managed to upload yesterday was very small (and of very poor quality, of course). I think what might be happening, which would make this impossible problem more plausible, is that I have a wildly fluctuating wireless signal.

This wasn't obvious before because it changes so rapidly that, when surfing, the delays in loading pages are short. I'm wondering if trying to upload larger files (above 500 KB, say) if each dip in signal means a restart for the transfer.

Just a theory for now. I'm new enough that I don't even know if that's plausible, how to test it, or how to address the problem.

I'd love to hear what you think and thanks again!

Whether or not it's plausible I don't know, but you could test it by plugging the computer directly into the modem or wireless router with a cable.

I think your theory might be sound, except for the fact that it happens only to ONE file type...

I've had a similar problem at a client site once, but they did not have problems with uploading .jpg files, they had problems uploading -any- files to a site I coded. Turned out that their wireless connection (they had a small microwave tower, linking to another microwave tower) was dropping packets badly. This often caused file transfers to abort and not finish.

However, why this will make only ONE type of file upload fail (.jpg files) is not addressed by the fluctuating signal theory - logically, it should make ALL file transfers fail. So I suspect that might be part of the problem, but something else must be afoot as well...

I would say it is a malformed .jpg .Gimp SHOULD NOT on linux be saving it as a .JPG ( all caps )

have you tried reinstalling gimp , libjpg , gtk ,and glib

yamel 07-02-2009 01:18 PM

I have tested it out with a more reliable internet connection and can upload and attach .jpg files. I altered enough settings in the way GIMP saves .jpg files that I'm honestly not sure if that's had an impact or not.

I think I just need to figure out why the OS on the second partition can manage to maintain a much stronger wireless connection than Linux Mint.

Thanks again for your advice!
