can you watch movies on SuSE 9.1?
can you watch dvd's on SuSE 9.1? what about copied movies? and what do i need to watch them.

You just need a video player and ofcourse a DVD drive if you want to watch DVDs.
xine and mplayer are msot common. I'd recommend mplayer. http://www.mplayerhq.hu/ |
which one of those do i DL?
|
just type kaffeine andwhen a window with a coffe appears, in file, type, play,-- dvd, vcd, cd, etc.
or click the green button--> multimedia -->videoplayer if you have personal ; but s if you use professional do as Akudewan said and use xine itīs easy 2 use |
First:
In SuSE via YaST, search "xine" and uninstall everything that pops up, including Xine-UI, Libxine and Kaffeine. The ones that ship with SuSE remove your ability to play a number of codecs because of copyright issues. So, you have to remove them first before going to the next step. Here's a good little overview: http://forums.suselinuxsupport.de/in...l=demux+plugin Now, download most of these RPMs and follow instructions on this page: http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/ This will get all major video codecs up and running, install libraries to allow you to play back protected DVDs, install a Xine GUI and even add quicktime playback via your browser (trailers at apple.com/trailers/ for example) with the xine-plugin. I find that I no longer need anything to do with mplayer and just stick with xine. In order to get rid of jumpy DVD, from root I type: hdparm -d1 /dev/dvd This does the trick. I even added: hdparm -d1 /dev/dvdram (which points to /dev/dvd, to be safe). To permanently set this so you don't keep running back in to jumpy DVD: Stick that hdparm command into /etc/init.d/boot.local and it will be executed on a reboot. --or (easier way)-- Yast -> Hardware -> IDE DMA > select: UltraDMA/33 (this is what worked for me-might be different for you). Reboot. Let me know how all of this goes. Rory |
This version of Xine (used by Kaffeine) has only a reduced
set of supported codecs. It is not able to play DVDs. Please read http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2003/09/xine_dvd.html for further details. thats what it says when i choose DVD |

Just follow the instructions that I wrote above (as they're SuSE specific) and closely follow the intructions on that page with all the rpms and you should be okay. But don't forget to uninstall everything I noted above, first, as I'm told that simply overwriting with the new rpms won't do the trick. Let us know how it goes. |
it wont let me install the realplayer ones, and when i watch something...i hear the sound, and the video stays still
|
Can't help you on the real player codecs. Maybe you have to uninstall the RealPlayer on SuSE, first. Dunno.
How's everything else working, though? |
well....i have a video clip saved. and it only plays the sound, theres no video. and what do i need to watch streaming videos?
|
it says i need libXm.so.2....but when i try to get it the page wont load

up

Did you install *all* of the development packages with 9.1? Those intructions on the xine rpm page seem to work for most people, if you follow them closely. You could also post over at the SuSE Linux forum (see link in my above post).
