Can you tell me some diffrent between LILO and GRUB?

Hi everyone,

Can you give me some service or feature between LILO and GRUB?

What LILO have and What GRUB have?

can you give me some of them? Compare it.

here read all about it yourself i've googled ONLY for 3min. and found what u need lilo: lilo.go.dyndns.org/ grub: www.gnu.org/software/grub/grub-2-support.en.html

In their current versions, AFAIK, any limitation is the same for lilo as it is for Grub. There isn't any core function that one offers over the other.

So the differences will be superficial:

The conf files for each are very different. Each time you make a change to the lilo.conf file, you have to rerun lilo to re-install the image into your MBR.

You may find more "eye candy" built around Grub, and it seems to be aimed more at newbies (getting the eye candy to work) where Lilo can also produce nice gui's it seems a bit intermediate.

Really, these aren't differences at all, at least not one that someone should look for in a boot loader...

Cool

your three minutes was a wasted effort, those two links do not answer the OP questions.

Imo, lilo is much more simple compared to grub, I prefer lilo because it is more basic. Grub seems to have a few extra things added to it, that I have never needed to use in any of my situations. Grub is prettier though, and most newer popular distro's are ditching lilo as the default boot-loader in favor of grub.

I think thats because GRUB is newer AND has more eye candy. Most of the distro want to start showing a more polished image.
A nice GUI is a lot nicer to look at for newbies. Althrought you can get by only with a prompt.

You only need to install GRUB once (usually grub-install /dev/hdx), and after that, you'll only need to edit /boot/grub/grub.conf (or /boot/grub/menu.conf) every time you update your kernel.

LILO still gets the job done, but you have to run it every time you update your kernel.

I would choose GRUB myself, only because I'm a scatterbrain sometimes, and I'll keep forgetting to run LILO.

Also, GRUB and LILO both offer eye-candy in the way of graphics and color options (if you read the man pages/google for it), but again, I would still choose GRUB.

I'm using Gentoo right now, and Gentoo has some really pretty options you can add to it's 'genkernel' command that will make your bootloader all pretty and stuff.

They both get the job done, and the differences are slight.
