Can you check my grub boot loader code and correct?

I have the xp boot loader load first, then I can select xp or linux, but I dont' like it. So I want it to point to grub and then run either xp or linux from there. I read that ntldr calls ntdetect.com from the c: drive. So I'm guessing I need to call that from grub to boot xp right? If I just do rootnoverify (hd0,0), makeactive, then chainloader +1, it just brings me back to the ntldr. Here is what i have trying to get grub to pass up ntldr and boot ntdetect.com:

root (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader /ntdetect.com or maybe /command.com

I try to boot this but it tells me "Invalid or unsupported executeable". I have tried changing around my hd's (hd1,0) (hd0,1), etc. but that hasn't helped. Am I going about this correct?

You have to to load xp with NTLDR, grub does not yet support loading NT kernel directly(and to be honest I doubt that it ever will).

But if you only have xp and no other microsoft operating system, just keep xp in boot.ini so that it bypasses the boot menu.
