Can you build XServer 1.8 replacing freetype with a different font render?

Can you build the new XServer 1.8 and replace freetype with another font renderer? In previous version I wasn't able to do this as freetype was a built-in. I understand this new version of XServer is more modular. Has anyone tried this?

I am running Ubuntu 2.28 w/Gnome 2.28.1 and xServer has already been installed but I would like to rebuild it using a different font renderer. Someone told me the latest version of xServer employed a more modular build process. I was hoping that freetype was now a module that could be replaced with a another font renderer in the build.
