can windows2003 R2 join linux domain?

I've heard that there are problems with a windows server operating system being joined to a linux domain. People have told me that because it is a server OS it holds a higher status than a workstation OS and that it begins to 'fight' with the linux DC.

If this is true, is there a way that I can join a windows 2003R2 server to our linux domain without disruption??

Can you explain exactly what it is you mean by "can win2003 R2 join linux domain"?

Do you want to get a DNS name from your DNS server? i.e. your domain is mdomain.net and you want this new machine to be win20003r3.mydomain.net.

Do you want to access some files on one of your Linux servers that are shared by either NFS or Samba?

Do you just want to get an IP from your Linux DHCP server so you can access the internet?

Something else entirely?

Well! i think u r talking about Directory Services.

Linux uses NIS or LDAP services for implementing Directory Services in pure Linux environment like Windows does with Active Directory in his environment But for joining Windows machines in Linux Directory Service Linux uses Samba Server, so windows machine can also join the Linux Directory Service.

I have worked on SAMBA for putting XP/2000 in Linux Directory Domain But I didn't heared ever to join Windows Server under SAMBA.. It should work but didn't done it myself.

"People have told me that because it is a server OS it holds a higher status than a workstation OS and that it begins to 'fight' with the linux DC."

LOL... Well there is nothing like that . Windows machine is smb/nmb protocols to talk withe ach other on network so it is the thing that Linux does. It starts talking with windows machine in smb/nmb. So, for window machines it not a matter who is actually on otherside.

yeah, DS is what I was talking about with Samba.

Okay, maybe I'll just bite the bullet and join it and see how it goes. Thanks for the info.

Smile How to Join Windows Server 2003 To Samba Domain Controller

Edit the following Registry key:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters\requiresignorseal change the value data from 1 to 0

In your network TCP/IP settings make sure you add the Samba servers IP address to the WINS on the Windows Server 2003.

Join the Samba Domain - Have fun!!!
