Can't Run Programs - Ubuntu 8.10

I'm having a problem running/installing programs in Ubuntu 8.10. There are a couple of the error messages I've received.

"Could not display "/home/name/Desktop/GoogleEarthLinux.bin". There is no application installed for this file type."

"Could not open the file /home/name/Desktop/BitDef…linux-gcc4x.amd64.deb.run." gedit has not been able to detect the character coding. Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file. Select a character coding from the menu and try again."

When I try to open the log for Tiger, a blank browser window opens. When I try to open it with open office, I get an error message.

GoogleEarth is available in the repositories. Install it via Synaptic package manager. As for the other file it is for a 64bit system, do you have Ubuntu 64bit installed?

Googleearth is probably in the medibuntu repository. You will need to google it and follow their instructions to set it up (not difficult at all). Once you are done, you can use System > Admin > Synaptic to install in a few simple clicks.
