Unhappy Can ping but can't browse

I am able to browse the internet via Firefox in Edgy but when I upgrade to 8.10, I can ping google but can't browse via Firefox. All browsing stops working in the new version. Why? How do I fix this? I tried adding DNS' and changing other settings but nothing works. I've gone back to Edgy. Also, why is the update manager so slow when I try to download an updgrade to 7.04?

make sure that you firefox is not set to work OFFLINE. There is a problem with "NetworkManager" sometimes causing firefox to start in OFFLINE mode.

In firefox, click "file" and uncheck "work offline" if checked.
