can only boot to promp
 

I can only boot to promp, what do I do to fix it to boot all the way t o main screen?
I am using Debian sqweeze i386, I have no idea what I am doing here, I need some help.

If you are only booting to prompt there are a few possibilities.
1) You have not installed a window manager or GUI at all because you are using a server only build. You have not told us what build you ar using. (e.g. ubuntu server does this as well, I do not use Debian)
2) Your graphics hardware is not compatible with what you have installed.

3) You are booting to the cli by default

try issuing "startx" from the command line and see what happens.

More information is needed.

Sorry for the lack of info for you, when I installed Debian it was the Lenny version 2.6.26-2-686, then the upgrade installed squeeze. I started having problems with file browser not closing, I reloged and it stopped, but the processor or hard drive is so active that the machine runs slow, so I rebooted thanking it would help, and that is when I could only get to prompt, after rebooting a few times I then did a install linux-image-2.6.26-2-vserver-686-bigmem thanking that would fix it, and it didn't.
I tried the startx command, and yes it loads a window, I get this error (Internal error: failed to initialize HAL) what is that and how can I fix it? And did that fix my boot problem?

HAL is the "hardware abstraction layer."

If you do not yet have any data on the machine, the easiest thing to do would be to wipe it and start over, using a current Squeeze installation disk.

If you have data, before you do anything else, boot to a Live CD (Knoppix is excellent for this) and back up your data before you do anything else.

Thank you, I have already started backing up my data, my cd's and and it seems even my scandisk can't be mounted, though I should be able to us scandisk being my mouse and keyboard is the usb port to. But with Knoppix I should be able to us them.

HAL not initialising means the Hardware Abstraction Layer is not starting which is the heart of a pre-emptive multitasking Operating system.
Assuming that you have not mucked around much (for example disabling services in order to try and make the thing work faster) and your hardware is relatively standard. (e.g. Not a laptop with broadcom chipset), then I would suspect a hardware fault.
If your hardware is OK then probably a critical service has become disabled and as you have been advised, best install afresh.
