Can Not Print: Canon S800, Redhat 9, Dlink Gateway/Wireless

Have been looking through the FAQS and instructions and still can not get my printer working. Here is my setup:

1) Redhat 9 installed on laptop with wireless network card
2) Canon S800 printer attached to DLINK gateway with print server

Firstly, the laptop is a dual-boo laptop with Windows XP. The printing from Windows through the wireless access point to the gateway to the printer is all working fine. I am trying to setup my linux boot to work as well. Please bare with me as I am pretty new to Linux.

What I have done:
1) Gone through the printer configuration tool provided with Redhat. Tried to setup both a CUPS or LPD printer. For server name I entered the IP address of the gateway. For Queue, I put /printers/queue1. I selected Canon s800 from the list of printers and have tried both gimp-print and gimp-print-ijs as the drivers. None of these will print a test page or show any communication with the printer. Get the following error when trying to print the CUPS test page or postscript test page:

There was a problem sending CUPS test page
to 'canons800' queue:

lpr: unable to print file: server-error-service-unavailable

2) Took a look over at linuxprinting.org and followed the instructions (cannot post the URL - not enough posts yet, but it is at linuxprinting called cups-doc) to put the canons800 ppd file in the correct directory. Got as far as configure CUPS through the localhost - nope Forbidden access denied.

I am at my wits end on getting this to work. I would REALLY appreciate anyone who could really walk me through this set by stpe to see what I may be doing wrong.

TIA!!!
Jen

I was going to suggest linuxprinting.org, but I see you've been there. My only other suggestion (or advice) is you need to be root to configure CUPS. Enter http://localhost:631/ in your browser and then click on "Do Administration Tasks." You will be prompted for the root username and password. You can then configure CUPS through this web interface.
