I am new to linux. I have just finished to install a suse linux v11.3 on a dell GX520 pc. The installation go through ok and boot up fine. But when i try to play a avi file by clicking on it, it go to search some support file and come back say " it can not find the plugin software source." please help.

You might not have proper codecs to play the avi files. Install vlc player to play whatever formats you want to. Use the package manager to install it.

Hi wcsing and welcome to LinuxQuestions! You can find useful information on the OpenSuse community site, about Multimedia support, here. Follow the links about "Restricted Multimedia Formats" and you will be able to install all the necessary using the "One-click install method" of OpenSuse. Optionally they will let you install Mplayer but in addition I would install VLC as suggested by Chaitanya above. You may also be intersted in installing Avidemux if you need to edit video files.

New install need, need to edit /etc/apt/sources.list to include multimedia also most items are in non-free repos

Here's what mine looks like, you have different distro so yours won't be the same.

GNU nano 2.2.4 File: /etc/apt/sources.list

#
# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux squeeze-di-beta1 _Squeeze_ - Official Beta i386 C$

# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux squeeze-di-beta1 _Squeeze_ - Official Beta i386 C$

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main non-free contrib
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main non-free contrib

deb http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports squeeze-backports main contrib$
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org squeeze main non-free

After adding the lines necessary:
sudo apt-get update
you might also need flashplugin-nonfree, if so:
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree
Follow instructions for you multimedia repo

Hope that this link helps you out

You are welcome. You will be fine with vlc. I use it for all my multimedia needs on Ubuntu. ( I do not edit videos or audio. my multimedia needs are restricted to listening music or watching video files )
