Can not locate dvdrw on my fedora 14

I installed fedora 14, and knoppix 6.71 Friday. I can not find or use my LG dvd writer, the OS for both do not see it. When I plug in an external dvd player threw a usb port it will work, unless its I/O Magic. And I am using the Radion HD4670 video card; some games have a distorted look and flash a lot. What am I doing wrong, and how do I correct my drivers?
Thank you.

Two questions for testing purposes:

Does it show when you run dmesg as root?

What happens when you put a valid CD/DVD in the drive?

No in root dmesg does not show the dvd drive, and when I put a good dvd in the drive nothing happens other than the dvd player spinning up. When I used ubuntu the OS showed and used the player so I know it works. I can even put a OS live disk in it and boot up into ubuntu again, just not anything else.
