Can not find a way to get online with ubuntu 10-04

I've tried every way to find a way to get on line

Welcome to LQ

What have you tired, and what didn't work?
Some more info would be helpful.

jag2000 08-02-2010 06:07 PM

can you post an ifconfig. are you using dhcp or a static ip?
please provide more info so we can help you.

von Stalhein 08-03-2010 04:10 AM

And, if that is the case, what setup did you use to post your statement :-)

Trickie 08-03-2010 06:17 AM

@von Stalhein: Good point.

pgroover 08-03-2010 07:22 AM

What type of setup are you looking for? Wired or wireless??? Is this a brand new system, was it online before if it isn't? Lots of questions to be answered, but as stated earlier, posting the output from ifconfig is a good way for anyone to try and help you resolve the problem.

skykooler 08-03-2010 09:46 AM

@von Stalhein: He posted from Windows.

FlamingZebra90 08-03-2010 09:48 AM

model and make of the machine would be nice too.

Suspicious type ? :}

noncomputergeek 08-04-2010 01:34 AM

I'm assuming you're talking about wireless?
I've always had issues with Ubuntu not getting my wireless to work on liveboots or brand new installations.
ethernet on the other hand always works.

Installing SUSE 11

Problem with suse 11 to get my wired network card on Dell inspiron 6000
Canīt find network card. Version 10 stopped working both on Wlan and wired. UBUNTU 10.04 is functioning on both after installation. Why?

I categorically deny any motivation to do with giveaways, but since upgrading to 10.04 from ?9.? my kids' machines can no longer "go online", or actually even get an address from my DHCP server. Can't identify any other change, quite strange. If I find the problem, I'll post...

melbob 08-04-2010 06:07 AM

If you are having problems with your network, you may want to check this out;

It's an entry on Ubuntugeek website about Network Manager problems.

Confused!

From: Newberry Brown

I don't think I gave enough information. I must use "dial up" for internet access.

I am a Newbie, please be patient with me! Don't talk over my head.

I am a Newbie, but, I did eventually find that "Ubuntu 10.04" cannot handle "dial up" for internet access (the only choice I have.) Now, how do I get on line?

colorpurple21859 08-13-2010 04:22 PM

Have you looked at this link and/or any others on how to get dial-up to work.
It will also help to know what kind of modem you have. Most stock internal pci modems won't work under linux. Also who is your dial-up provider? Some dial-up providers require special setups to get connected under linux.

Frank Cox 08-14-2010 07:55 PM

It can be done!

Hi Newberry:

I have never done this on 10.04 but on 9.10 but I had to uninstall the network manager {you can do this from Synoptic or add remove programs} to get 9.10 to dial and I suspect you are having the same problem.
I ran the set serial program and installed GnomePPP as the dialer and it has worked fine ever since. I believe the setserial was necessary because I was connecting an ancient serial modem I bought for 14.00 on Ebay through a USB port, you may not need to but it won't hurt anything.
You absolutely can hook up by dialup with Ubuntu as I do it but the people who wrote it are not real interested in dialup.

If you tell me what you do with the computer it might make more sense for you to ditch Ubuntu and go with Puppy which is super dialup friendly.
I keep Ubuntu on my computers because it will do everything but 95% of the time I use Puppy Linux because 95% of the time it does everything I want it to and it absolutely flies even on older machines. There is a 50% chance Puppy will find your modem and load the driver automatically.
There is an 80% chance it will find it after you load the additional driver package and a 100% chance you can buy a modem for less than 15.00 that will load automatically. Ubuntu is awesome when it comes to printers, it is a shame it is so dismissive of poor smucks like us stuck with a choice between dialop and the rip off of satellite that requires you to keep dialup as a backup anyway.

BTW my dialup cost 85.00 a year with NatISP,com and it is better than average.

The main problem I believe is the Network Manager. I was encouraged to install it by those "friendly" folks at the Linmodem list and called a liar and an idiot because what they told me to do was not working.

After way more hours than it was worth I Googled up somewhere that NetWork Manager will never let you connect by dial-up.
They chose to call me a liar rather then allow anyone to find out they were actually fallible human beings like the rest of us on the planet.

I know what it is like to be a noobie and I understand what it is like to get frustrated when you try to help people but never is there an excuse for being rude and unkind.

I don't remember if you are trying to setup a winmodem or if you have a serial/hardware modem. It can be such a nightmare to set up a winmodem that is is certainly worth the money for the serial modem which is usually faster and mpre stable anyway but if you just have to have an internal and don't want to spend the money for an internal serial modem I suggest you find a winmodem that will work off the Martian driver or perhaps the Dell Ubuntu drivers and buy it I am not at all impressed with the linuxent drivers for conextant nor the people who I dealt with there.
Their driver never worked and they never refunded my money despite numerous requests. There is a high probability that you have a conextant/Rockwell chip in your modem but you can buy a new winmodem that is compatible with free drivers that work as well or better.

And you can buy a real hardware modem for about 50,00 and used for about 20.00 . My ancient USRobotics modems 33.6 flashed to 56 K work great.
These external modems were designed for businesses that rely on them for everything from transferring important documents to their credit card machines and are magnitudes more reliable than cheap winmodems that are nothing but telephone line interfaces anyway. With the serial modem you are not using up resources from your computer. I would not hesitate to buy a used one . I have seen serial modems as cheap as 30.00 but am unfamiliar with their quality.

The US Robotics start at about 40.00 on Ebay for their USB serial modem.
Be careful, most USM modems are winmodems. The internal serials start at
around 60.00 and the externals retail for 99.00 but you can find USRobotics externals for about 70.00 . You cannot go wrong with USRobotics.

I would try looking for Network Manager in Administration and uninstalling it. If you decide later that was not helpful it is just as simple to reinstall it. Run the setserial program and install Gnome-PPP as the dialer and getting on line should be easy.

If you can't hook your computer to a friends DSL or cable modem you will have to download the Gnome-PPP and setserial while your at it from a friends connection and install it. If you have to go that route try and find the Gnome-PPP as .deb file and it should install automatically .
If you have to download as a tgz {tarball} you may have to compile it.
In that case find a tutorial or post your request here or at the Ubuntu forums and get someone th walk you through it. I am struggling to learn that myself or I would offer to do that myself.

Hope this helps.
If there is anything I can help with let me know.

Good Luck!

jtarin 08-15-2010 12:43 AM

GnomePPP is the GUI for WVdial.. I used to use a Zoom modem 56k serial which I still have buried somewhere around here and will swear by it as being the absolutely best external modem money can buy. It's the only modem I've had that is lightning-proof. I used to live in Texas and lightning was a problem with any other brand of modem.

Frank Cox 08-15-2010 01:24 AM

Hi Newberry:

I checked out that link that colorpurple posted and it was interesting. The slamr driver works very well with at least one of the modems I have under Puppy Linux.

This is the Modem I am using under Puppy on this box.
DESCRIPTION: Conexant Device unknown
VENDOR: 14f1 DEVICE: 2702 KERNEL MODULE: hsfpcibasic2

hsfpcibasic2 is the driver and this combination works under Puppy so it should work under any distro using the 2.6 kernel

This site is helpful
http://hardware4linux.info/module/hsfpcibasic2/

Do you know how to identify the modem? I don;t have Ubuntu on this machine or I would tell you. If you know how post it , if not post that and I , or someone will tell you how.

I tossed the modem using the Dell driver on this machine machine the other day after it got fried in an electrical storm. I have all the info somewhere as to which of the modems uses which driver on Puppy . This machine is an old P4 Dell Deminsion 4100 with 500mb of ram but it is much faster than my much newer Dell at the office with 2 megs of ram and the d.ual core chip,

If I sound biased towards Puppy I am but just like with Ubuntu I have learned it usually pays to wait a year at least before installing the latest version. I tried installing the latest Ubuntu 10.04 and the latest Puppy Linux version 5 Lucid but I am running Ubuntu9.04 Jaunty Jackalope and Puppy 4.31.

If I knew which winmodem you have I might get lucky and be able to tell you there is a driver for it, a free one that is full speed.

I went down to the local junk shop when they were going out of business and bought all the modems they had . Out of the 9 4 worked on Puppy with the drivers that come with Puppy 431.
There are threads about the subject at the Puppy Linux forum. If you were to find a modem driver that works for your modem you can download the driver package . The highly secret login for the Puppy Linux depositories is User-Puppy then Password-Linux but don't tell anyone .

The files are probably going to be Puppy Package files similar to ,deb or Debian files. Just rename the file to ,tgz and extract it.

Thanks to Fred Cox, I believe I can now solve my problem. I am rethinking trying to use Linnux. It seems that Linux is a Hobby and I already have two time consuming Hobbies, so, good night to all.
Newberry

jtarin 08-25-2010 01:54 AM

Newberry looking for that third time-consuming hobby, repulses Linux as not an adequate time-consumer and moves on in search of the Holy grail.

LOL!

Linux , like computers themselves are not for everyone. Some people like to be asked are you really , really absolutely positively sure your sure that your are you really , really absolutely positively sure your sure that you want to do that.

Bill Gates has these people covered.

Newberry

Rethinking would involve thinking in the first place.

I spent a great deal of time to learn the little I know but I have my reasons.
In ten minutes you can have Puppy Linux online with dialup and that includes the install. And you can back up the entire program in 3 minutes and restore it in 2.

Try that with windows .

My pastor's machine was so slow on dialup with XP it was unusable , with Puppy the download speed went from an average of 1 meg every 4.5 minutes to one every 80 seconds.

People bent over backwards trying to help you and instead of appreciating the kindness of strangers you insult and downgrade their "hobby" .

It is your loss, I can pull a computer out of the trash, load it with the equivalent of 10 grand worth of windows programs {most of them better] and it will smoke the fastest windows machine money can buy all without spending a dime. If Linux is a hobby its one cool hobby.
Its funny but I don't recall ever seeing a windows based webserver, you?

Of course it may be your two time consuming hobbies are waiting for windows to load and learning how to remove the latest windows viruses.

von Stalhein 08-26-2010 06:48 AM

Regardless of the OS or program at issue at the time, I always joke that computers are a great time saving device if you have plenty of time left to save.

Meh, he saw, he tried, he didn't conquer. Maybe he'll be back.

Either way, he had a crack!
