Hi, I havent tried running kazaa on linux cos i have it dualboot with xp but I might try it sooner or later. Anyway, if you want to run M$ software on linux you might want to visit this site. Good luck

DrOzz 01-23-2004 11:12 AM

well no there is no kazaa client for linux, but there is p2p clients built for linux that use the kazaa network ...
but if you really do want to install kazaa (for whatever reason) then you'll need wine ..
and here is the instructions
but really why waste your time with the no good kazaa, when you can choose from hundreds of linux native p2p programs ...

graffitici 01-23-2004 11:16 AM

Technically you can. Kazaa being a windows application, you'll have to use an emulator. The most popular you can get around is called Wine.
You can get the Redhat 9 rpms from www.winehq.com

However.

I do not think this solution is the most practical. There are people out there who has done it. I personally couldn't manage to download a file with it. Do not despair though. There is a better solution.
There is a daemon whose duty is to connect to various servers and download files. Normally it is run in the console. However, you can install another application (gui) that will let you use it under kde (supposing you use KDE, and you should). However, by default, giFT cannot connect to Kazaa's network, Fasttrack. However, you can make it connect by installing some plug-ins! I love linux. So here's the plan (my plan, other people may have better solutions!):
install these in this order
giFT
giFT plug-ins (2 i think)
apollon (the graphical user interface to giFT)

and then you are done.

Download the files first from:
(there is a package form apollon's page that will let you download all of them, but I think we should stick with the rpms). Get the latest files from:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...group_id=83763
http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...group_id=34618

Then we'll start installing them

just for your knowledge, wine is not an emulator...go look up what w.i.n.e stands for ;-)

graffitici 01-23-2004 11:54 AM

Funny thing that the "Table of Equivalents" you put in your signature states it under
10) Emulators.
Windows emulator

Do you seriously believe this was a constructive comment?

DrOzz 01-23-2004 04:06 PM

thats just great what that site says ... if someone told you that an orange was really named a car, would you believe them and start telling your mother to go peal you a car for dessert ?

and believe what was a constructive comment?
p.s. if you didn't find it yet
Wine Is Not an Emulator

graffitici 01-23-2004 04:29 PM

yes I know pretty well what WINE means.

You misunderstood my remark about your "constructive comment". The fact that literally the acronym wine says that it is not an emulator doesn't prevent it from being an emulator. Have you ever thought why it was called wine, and not kine, dine, line or mine? Because it is a WINdows emulator! You cannot mix the name's literal meaning with the applications' function. Here's what "emulator" means:

In computers, an emulator is a hardware device or a program that pretends to be another particular device or program that other components expect to interact with.

If that's what wine does, then now matter what it is called, it IS an emulator.

I find it entirely despicable that a so called "guru" like you can have such a pedantic attitude.
Your comment didn't help novkhan at all. If not to help, what is the objective of these forums? To show-off that you know the meaning of an acronym? You should know better since you have been around before me.

Everything would be all right if you didn't type this:
"go look up what w.i.n.e stands for ;-)"

This kind of disparaging attitude should not be allowed in these forums. That's is why I urge the moderators to delete all these nonsense posts beginnning from POST #5.

as for one of the applications you could use is limewire.. go google it.
easy install, much like kazaa and haven't found any fakes

btw: kazaalite is much better than kazaa

h/w 01-23-2004 08:03 PM

on the subject of p2p apps, someone had written a port of the win32 "soulseek" (which i consider the best) app, and had an rpm (which i had tried, and which worked wonderfully too).
though this was last year, and i dont use these anymore ATM.
:)

novkhan 01-23-2004 08:25 PM

Hmm..
i have downloaded limewire-core-3.6.0
can any one tell me what i should do next?

Please explain in details on!
Please state down the command to type
and what should i see after i type in the command!

Thankyou

DrOzz 01-24-2004 09:56 AM

lol, you know what i don't even know why i am bothering, but this is funny, so regarding your "constructive" post#8 all i got to say is no wine does not stand for windows emulator, thats just something that people like you came up with, it means one thing, and one thing only and thats wine is not an emulator ... even if it was, thats still what it means ....
so since this will be my last post regarding this silly matter, i leave you with
http://www.winehq.com/site/docs/wine...ONS-ABOUT-WINE

so start reading, thats straight from the wine docs :p

oh and no problem novkhan ;-)

graffitici 01-24-2004 12:07 PM

novkhan;
What is the extension of the package you have downloaded? does it end with rpm? If so you need to type:
rpm -ivh limewire-core-3.6.0.rpm
as root. You might need to take care of dependencies. That is, you may have to download some other files that limewire needs. If so, you can start searching at rpmfind.net or shrike.freshrpms.net

On the other hand if the file you have downloaded has the extension .tar.gz, you'll have to compile it.
extract: #tar -zxvf limewire*.tar.gz

go to the folder created:
#cd limewire

and then
# ./configure
# make
# make install
(as root).

By the way I am sick of explaining these procedures to everybody. I know that everything has a start, but I think you should at least have an idea of installing software under linux. There is such a port in linuxquestions too as far as I remember.

and, my dear DrOzz;
Here's what the link you posted affirms:
No, as the name says, Wine Is Not a (CPU) Emulator. Wine just provides the Windows API.

Not a CPU emulator. Because it is a "software" emulator. If you check the definition I have posted (which is taken from whatis.techtarget.com), an emulator " pretends to be another particular device or program that other components expect to interact with."
A red car still being a car, a software emulator is also an emulator (even though it is not a CPU emulator).

srikantmarakani 01-24-2004 05:03 PM

Try mldonkey

Mldonkey is a very useful edonkey+fasttrack+overnet+bittorrent+edonkey client which you might find quite useful. It is available at http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/mldonkey/. Try and get the latest cvs version and compile it (requires ocaml and liblabgtk both of which come prepackaged for debian) since the precompiled versions have some problems with the edonkey network.
