Can I remove KDE, or how much of it?

Hello,

There have been severla threads on KDE. However KDE seems to be at least two things: a desktop manager and a set of applications.

Concerning windowsmanagers, I use Icewm and Fluxbox (can't see the difference between Fluxbox and Blackbox by the way).

Concerning KDE, I use Konqueror (File manager only) when I'm really stuck -- otherwise x-term and dfm do the job for me --, Kedit when gvim is less convenient. Of course run these programmes from icewm or Fluxbox.

I don't want to use KDE as a deskmanager because it's bloated and too much like windows (though much better).

Can I keep some KDE software and remove the destopmanager?
can I remove KDE through apt-get and install only updated versions of the KDE software I want?

Thanks!

you can try as root:

apt-get remove kdelibs3 kdelibs4

what i would do is to reinstall Libranet, at the software screen, click on minimal install, ignore kde, and continue with the installation, after the update/upgrade install whatever app you want, i use ksnapshot and guarddog from kde, but my wm is Fluxbox.

keep kde-base, kde-libs and qt.
remove all other kde related things...
kde-edutainment
kde-toys
kde-games
kde-multimedia
kde-network
kde-artwork
etc etc etc...

Hello macondo,

Well I'm not sure i want to reinstall Libranet just now because I've upgraded several apps and don't want to go through all this again on my dial-up connection. I'd rather wait until I add a little Ram to my computer, and install Libranet 2.8.1.

However, I'm interested in "minimal install" :study: -- what does it install?

And of course next time I install Libranet I won't install KDE or Gnome destop-managers (gnome as a desktop never worked with Libranet 2.7 on my machine but it doesn't matter at all).

Okay, qwijibow, this is going to be fun!

Thanks, both of you, for your help!

Hello again,

Just to say I've just found out my favourite editor on Windows has been ported to Linux : EditPadLite. :)

So I don't even need KEdit, and EditPadLite runs without KDE though it needs QT (which you can download with EditPL).

Cheers,
