can i have a few partitions mounted in one directory ?

sorry for a such a 'stupid' question, but i am not sure of the consequences whether i can have a few partitions mounted for example in /home ?
from logical reasoning i would say that it is not possible from umount and storage (how linux should know where should he put a file - in all the volumes or one and then which) , but i am quite new to linux and 'd like to know if i am reasoning right?
