Can I grow an NTFS partition when I install Suse 9.1
 

Hi I have a 120g hard drive with 100g windows NTFS parition and the remaining 20g is a linux partition and some swap space.

The linux parition and swap space show up in the windows 2000 administrative toold management console as an empty extended partition with two logical drives. basically what I would like to do is use windows to delete those two paritions and then recover some space of the NTFS partition (I have since been told that 20g is huge for a linus install) while installing Suse.

Even if it is not possible to grow the parition can anybody see any obvious flaws with what I plan to do, I am just a bit nervous because the last time I installed Suse I couldn't boot and had to use FIXMBR. Now though, I have managed to get LILO booting for me. I just don't want to end up with a problem like this

also what isee is that u ned to resize ut partion without formating ur ntfs drive,

Sorry about the posting mixup, as you can see this is in fact my first post and I originally tried ot include a hyperlink but wasn't allowed until I had made 5 posts.

Anyway yes I would like to be able to resize (specifically increase the size of) my NTFS partition without formatting. But I would also like to know if there are any pitfalls I am heading into when I delete the old partitions and re-utilize the space.

what i think will be good for u is to
delete the both linux partiions(it is in the logical drive right???
then make a partition,whcih is required for linux,,make for swap,and then format the remaning space as NTFS,ext3 etc etc whatever u want..


i fel that using 3rd party tools can be dangerous

also to be free from any risk,u should take backup of ur important data

Hmm, that sounds like a good idea.

For now what I'll do is make my linux partitions and then leave the other space free. If everything goes smoothly I'll make a FAT32 partition so I can easilly send stuff from linux to windows.

Thanks for the advice, I've made my backups and will be doing it now. Will let you know what happens.

P.S. I'm going to a LAN this weekend so if I REALLY manage to screw things up I'll find somebody to help out face to face. Neverthless it's nice to have an online resource like this for when I screw up at home . :)

I worked yipeee, I am now logged in on my new Suse 9.1 KDE desktop!!!

One tiny prob is that I have a second Win2k installation on my other hard drive and Lilo is not booting to it. (It's a separate installation for my dad to use for business so that I can tinker with my setting without damaging his.) Anyway the windows on this drive seems to boot fine.

Basically it's now my big 120G with 90G NTFS, 500mb swap, 8G reiserfs, 10G FAT32

I selected LILO over GRUB to boot because I've read up more about it, and my lilo.conf looks like this:

I'm not too stressed about it but if you can figure out why the first block labelled family seems to boot my first disk I'd appreciate it. Anyway I'm going to bed for now. Will check tomorrow.

20gb is huge for a linux drive? jeez... my linux drive is 120GB (well 119.25GB ext3 and 750MB swap)

Okay it wasn't an error, I was just too tired to investigate properly. The problem was with the two boot.ini files and I sorted it out.

P.S. AAnarchYY, I already have lots of stuff on my NTFS partition that I would rather like to hang onto. That said I have already intalled WAY more stuff than I can ever really use and it's still well under 8G so I guess that's what was meant when people told me 20G was a lot. It's much more bang for byte than windows.

while in linux it does not matter whther u have some space left behind in ur linux partion

while using windows if my free space in windows partiton goes down the limit ,it affects my system performance,but with linux i have gonw to 0% free and no such change in the performance
